He started his career on politics in 2020, becoming a member ofthe Queens’ 36th District. He worked to to provite protection to tenants, help stabilise rent, providing debt relief to taxi drivers, and provision of transport facilities and participating in a 2021 hunger strike alongside cab drivers.
Local Campaigning
Mamdani started his campaign to run for mayor of New York City in October 2024 on terms: no billionaire money, no favours from Washington elites. Rather, he grew his movement with 20,000 small donors and a volunteer force of 27,000— one of the biggest in the entire city. These volunteers put in the effort to go across Astoria, door to door to support the campaign.
- The Victory of the Underdog
Overcoming Obstacles
Compares the former governor, Mamdani was just underdog against a power with favorable reputation and support from $25 million Political Alliance Community(PAC). Not only that, he had to face smear ads, trying to damage his image using his religion and stance on Israel-Palestine situation to turn people against him.
Despite the efforts of opposing parties, the voters made their decision on June 24. About 93 percent of precincts reporting for voting day, Mamdani took the lead with 43.5 percent votes ahead of Cuomo’s 36.4 percent. And thus Cuomo had admitted defeat.

Reaction from the Political Machine
The reaction from Mainstream operatives was not positive. James Carville stated that Mamdani’s radical ideas would only weaken the democratics across the nation. As for Wall Street commentators, thry felt suspicious of his tax increase proposals, lavelling him as “Zaddy Zohran”. Though he did recieve support from important progressive figures like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
- Mamdani’s Impact on New York
Representation and Diversity
Mamdani ’s win is more than just some personal victory for him but an inspiration for many. It would subdue traditional barriers that prevent certain types of people vase on race, religion etc. to bd involved in US government. If he is elected not, he will be New York’s first Indian American and Muslim and even the youngest mayor to be given this position. He will serve as example for so many immigrants in of New York City such as Muslims, South Asians, young people— for them his win, is inspiring and representation of their culture, identity, stories and backgrounds.
Community Support and Engagement
His plan is to make the follwing changes:
• Rent freeze
• Fare-free buses
• Provisions of universal childcare
• 200,000 affordable housing units
• Increasing minimum wage to $30/hour
• Millionaires tax to fund these programs
During his campaign, Mandani msde an effort to go meet locals in town halls, subway stations, and community centers to hear their ideas and opinions and harner support rather thsn expecting them to come to him. This allowed him to gain their trust and support and made the communities who felt forgotten in matters of political change to voice their views and concerns.
- The Backlash from Billionaires and Elites
Challenges from the Ruling Classes
Wealthy donors had an immediate negative response to Mamdani’s campaign. Cuomo’s PAC took action and spent $16 million attacking Mamdani’s views and ideas. Financial elites labelled his tax proposals impractical as they were concerned the radical plans he had in mind would effect business and scare away rech snd finance workers from the city.
Donald Trump, the president of USA even gave his opinion, accusing Mamdani of being a radical influenced by foreign ideals that weren’t fit for the US.
Importance of Local Movements
Despite the backlash, Mamdani’s campaign stays strong not feeling intimidated or threatened by the stronger powers or and not accepting bribes of money. Mamdani’s campaign refuses to back down—or upsize with big money. As Common Dreams have stated, “The people of New York City proved that a movement powered by hope, courage, and working people can beat the money of billionaires” . Mamdani’s whole ideal as running for mayor shows that he strives to break the system of power only the Rich hold.
- Conclusion
Zohran Mamdani’s primary victory is just a campaign win—it’s a shot at the long standing political system. His rise in the political scene is rooted in experiences he as went through himself, bold policy ideas, and a refusal to give into financial pressure.
Though this isn’t the end as other candidates in the November’s general election such Eric Adams, Republican Curtis Sliwa, a former governor Cuomo could still take the lead due to support from elites. Even then, Mamdani’s core message resonates when people come together and struggle, change can occur.
As he progresses from surprise nominee to frontrunner, one fact that can’t be denied is: New York politics are changing and may not feel the same as they have been for so many years.
